Yash Chopra ~ "King of Romance" No More

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - October 21, 2012: Veteran Bollywood filmmaker Yash Chopra, who gave Indian cinema path breaking movies, passed away in Mumbai on Sunday evening.

The producer- director was suffering from dengue and after being diagnosed he was admitted to Lilavati hospital last week.

Chopra reportedly fell ill on October 10, upon returning home from superstar Amitabh Bachchan's birthday party.

Yash Chopra was on life support-system for some time now. According to hospital reports Mr Chopra suffered from multiple organ failure.

Yash Raj Films issued a statement to the media, saying: "Yash Chopraji breathed his last at around 5.30pm today (IST). Details of his last rites will be communicated later."

The 80 year old legend was working on his up coming movie 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan' and announced his retirement after the movie.

After the filmmaker was admitted speculations were rife about his movie being delayed. 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan' will remain his unfinished movie as he was yet to shoot a romantic song between lead actor Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif.

Great loss to Indian cinema

Film director Subhash Ghai said to media: "It's a great loss to Indian cinema. Yashji had always said he wants to die making films.

"He was full of energy; an inspiration truly."

Regarded as the country's king of celluloid romance, Chopra has also proved his mettle with intensely emotional and tragic movies, many of which went on to become box-office blockbusters.

Born in 1932 in Lahore, now in Pakistan, the film-maker was favoured by leading Indian actors with his movies seen as a sure-fire way to become a hit with audiences.

Chopra has made some of Indian cinema's most memorable films such as Deewar, Kabhi Kabhie, Silsila and Chandni. His flamboyant style of film-making, movies filmed in exotic locales and mellifluous music became a hallmark, endearing him to filmgoers.

Chiffon sarees and the Swiss Alps are so synonymous with Chopra's style of film-making that Switzerland Tourism even offered visitors a guided tour of the places where the director filmed some of his most famous songs and scenes.

Riding on his success, Chopra established Yash Raj Films, one of Bollywood's biggest production houses, churning out at least three movies a year. In November, the film studio announced its foray into Hollywood, signing on actors such as Nicole Kidman and Jason Bateman for its overseas productions.

Chopra also produced Indian cinema's longest-running blockbuster, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), which marked the debut of his son Aditya as director.

"I have never made romantic films. I have made films on human relations, and humans are complicated people," Chopra said in a recent interview.

The decibel level in the auditorium, which was already high, skyrocketed when the actor made an entry. Swaying to his hit Chammak Challo, King Khan subsequently got all the three kid finalists to perform a song of his choice. Adnan Sami had the audience swinging with his tribute to Shammi Kapoor, even as wife Roya Faryabi and ZEEL MD and CEO Punit Goenka watched.

The highlights of the evening included winner Azmat Hussain’s terrific entry seated within a robot. Mentors Kailash Kher and Javed Ali looked on with pride as the kids competed in a climactic act for the grand trophy. Incidentally SRK found his match in funsters Manish Paul and Jay Soni as they shared a witty repartee. The ceremony for this year's International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards is taking place in Toronto on June 25, but there are plenty of scheduled celebrations in the Greater Toronto Area leading up to the big gala.

One of the key objectives for both the Government of Ontario and IIFA is that the IIFA experience is an opportunity for people both from the region (participating four cities) as well as visitors from other areas of Ontario, Canada and the world to share in the celebration of IIFA. The 'IIFA Buzz' is a program of events that has been developed to incorporate municipal programming and events that celebrate Indo-Ontarian communities and identify with the IIFA brand.

The events are being staged by the cities of Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton and Markham with support of the Government of Ontario and endorsement from IIFA. Bachchan writes, "Uddhav Thakeray calls. He has just come out of the theatre after 'Rann' and is not able to find appropriate words to describe his appreciation for the film and the performance. Minutes later Bala Saheb calls.
'I want to see this film. Come and show it to me!' 'You have not been to see me for a long time!' I assure him I shall arrange a projection in his house. I ask after his health. He is fine he says.
He cannot travel out due to his frail condition, but the fire in him still burns. He is resolute and firm as ever and in that resoluteness you discover an endearing, that sudden soft moment, which has always made his presence so strong and affectionate. His sense of humor is in tact as he punches in some wise ones!!
"Mumbai woke up on Wednesday to the news that theatres were removing posters of Shah Rukh Khan and his new movie, My Name is Khan. The self-censorship comes allegedly under pressure from the Shiv Sena, which has attacked Shah Rukh for saying that Pakistani players should have been a part of the Indian Premier League tournament. Of the 11 Pakistani players put up for auction, not a single player received even one bid. Shah Rukh has told NDTV that he does not regret his remarks.
Distributors say that the release of My Name is Khan, directed by Karan Johar, may be postponed because of the Sena's implicit threat to stop theatres from screening the film.
On Tuesday, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi announced that Bachchan is the new brand ambassador for his state. Nearly four weeks ago, Bachchan escorted Modi to a theatre for a special screening of Paa.
Bachchan later said he organized the screening because he wanted the movie, produced by his own company, to be declared tax-free in the state.

(NSI News Source Info) My Desk YYZ - February 4, 2010: Trouble is likely to continue for Shah Rukh Khan starrer My Name is Khan, scheduled to be released on February 12, as police fear that vandals this time may even try to sneak into the theatres screening the movie.
"The worry for the theatre owners playing My Name... is two-fold. While angry Shiv Sena activists are already tearing off the movie's posters, some may even buy tickets to go inside and cause maximum damage there," a senior police official told PTI.
The official said theatre owners are confident that any protests outside the cinemas would be dealt sternly.
However, they fear the consequences and extent of damage if the rabble-rousers enter the movie halls, the officer said.
Sentiments are running high after SRK, the celebrity co-owner of Kolkata Knight Riders, an IPL franchise, favoured inclusion of Pakistani cricketers for the game's third season.
Shiv Sena has come out openly against the superstar demanding an apology from him. Sena has also threatened the city theatre owners to stall the movie's screening.
Meanwhile, My Name... distributors met Police Commissioner D Sivanandhan, to discuss the situation. The top cop assured them full security.
However, no theatre owners have met the police yet. "If the owners demand protection, security would be provided," said Joint Police Commissioner Himanshu Roy.

The duo are in New York to promote their latest film My Name is Khan and were invited to by Fox Searchlight Pictures, who are distributing the film in the US, to open trading at the world's biggest stock exchange.
Before the event, Shah Rukh said on his tweeter account: "Nasdaq will be fun. Have to make sure I reach on time, otherwise will end up being blamed for economic upheaval across the world too..ha ha."
Shortly after ringing the NASDAQ bell, Khan and Kajol spoke with New Yorkers about their new film. Responding to a question, Khan clarified that the film is unrelated to last year's incident at the Newark Airport in the US where he was stopped by immigration officers because his name showed up in one of the check-lists."The film has nothing to do with it. It is a love story...and what people can do to achieve their love," Khan said and noted that film explores the impact of 9/11 on people completely unrelated to the last year's incident.

Khan also underlined that he had "no issues" with the Newark incident. "I have been stopped often enough," he said, referring to his fans. "But some of the interviews are little interrogative," the actor said."

Its not big deal...if I'm going to a country then I have to respect the rules of that country," he said, stressing that the incident was not a publicity stunt topromote his movie.

On working with Johar, Khan said: "The greatness of Karan is as a writer."

Kajol said while the duo had no idea of what was happening in the market front, it was still a lot of fun. "We had a great moment," Khan said.

Their latest movie centres around a Muslim man, who faces difficulties in social interaction, and falls unconditionally for the beautiful Mandira, a Hindu single mother living out her version of the global dream of success.

The movie, also starring Jimmy Shergill and Tanay Chheda, will be released on February 12 worldwide and will also premiere at the 60th annual Berlin International Film Festival during the week of its release.

(NSI News Source Info) My Desk YYZ - January 29, 2010: Kolkata Knight Riders have exhausted their quota of foreign cricketers but they would have loved to have Pakistani players in their ranks, co-owner of the IPL franchisee Bollywood Actor Shah Rukh Khan said today.
“We did have a number of them in the first IPL and in the second, no Pakistani player was allowed to play. This year, we don’t have any more slot left. But if we had and they are made available legally, we would have loved to have them,” the actor said.
“We had one slot this year and we took Shane Bond, because we needed a fast bowler. We would have loved to have any player from any country which would boost our team,” Shah Rukh said.
Lamenting the snub that the Pakistani player received in the January 19 auction, Shah Rukh Khan said they should have been welcomed.
“If there was any issue, that could have been solved in a fairly, nice manner. I believe my country stands for democracy and goodness and we should invite everyone.
“I never involve myself in politics — in films or in sports. We are a wonderful democratic, happy an secular country and that’’s how it should be,” he said.
