Pooja Chopra Wins Femina Miss India '09

Pooja Chopra Wins Femina Miss India '09
(NSI News Source Info) April 6, 2009: The beauty crown is worn one inch above the forehead, where your destiny is written," said host R Madhavan, capturing in a sentence the essence of
an evening that culminated in three new beauty queens being coronated amid loud applause. The Pantaloons Femina Miss India 2009 pageant seemed to have hopped onto the Deccan Queen Express, although its route included a significant Delhi detour.
PFMI Universe 2009 Ekta Chaudhary (in green), PFMI World 2009 Pooja Chopra (in red) and PFMI Earth 2009 Shriya Kishore (in maroon, standing).
The three winners were: PFMI Universe 2009 Ekta Chaudhary from Delhi, PFMI World 2009 Pooja Chopra from Pune and PFMI Earth 2009 Shriya Kishore from Mumbai. This year, the traditional pecking order of the titles was given a tweak: PFMI Universe and PFMI World shared top honours—both are No. 1—and were followed by PFMI Earth. Aflush with excitement, the UWE trio said they were dying to fall on chocolates and "ghar ka khana" and one said that all she wanted to do was "hug mom".
Easily the most anticipated lookfest of the year, the PFMI finale was held in the open-air setting of the Andheri Sports Complex on Sunday evening. The action played out under a large circular canopy on sets kitted out in a bold geometic pattern. The venue was packed out with only standing room at the back.
Without so much as a whiff of breeze by way of relief, the muggy April air probably had even more moisturiser than collectively used by the contestants. The common question posed to the three finalists was: What was the one thing you would ask God if you met him, and why? All three were earnestness personified in their replies. Chopra, who has been brought up by a single mom, said she would ask why certain children were deprived of the love of a mother. The spunky 23-year-old, with a relish for kickboxing and paragliding, also quoted the much-flogged Mother's Day line that since God couldn't be everywhere, he created mothers.
Choudhary, also 23, who has given up a graduate degree in business administration, said she would ask the almighty why, if we had all been created equal, we fought each other in his name. The third girl, Kishore, a 22-year-old from the Mumbai suburb of Kandivli, who is awaiting her hotel management degree, wrestled with the issue of mortality, but in a rather confused way. The new beauties were crowned by last year's title holders, PFMI World 2008 and Miss World first runner-up Parvathy Omanakuttan, PFMI Universe 2008 Simran Kaur Mundi and PFMI Earth 2008 Tanvi Vyas. One of this year's finalists was Harshita Saxena from Goa, who was disqualified last year after she won the PFMI Earth crown because of her contractual obligations to a rival show.
The re-try proved lucky and Saxena, who was among the last five standing, also walked away with the Agile Femina Miss 10 title. Keeping the evening flowing with a ready stock of gags and jibes were hosts R Madhavan and the enviably good-looking Malaika Arora Khan. Their digs were mostly aimed at big designer labels, with Madhavan turning Gucci into a desi tongue-twister and co-hosts Swapnil Joshi and Karan Wahi pushing the gag further, making Dolce & Gabbana into "Dhokla & Ganthia". Everyone was waiting to get an eyeful of the finalists. The 20 young women made an entry in summery Indo-Western couture by Rocky S, and performed to the track Fame.
With an average height of 5.8 ft, they easily trounced the national average of 5.3 ft. Later, shod in Citywalk footwear, in a Jai Ho ramp walk choreographed by Marc Robinson, they modelled creations by Pantaloons (designed by Rajesh and Anirban), Arabella (Prasad Bidappa and Varadha Rajan) and Ritu Kumar, with jewellery by Collection G in association with D'damas and the World Gold Council.
Three Bollywood divas burnt up the stage one after another. Genelia D'Souza, in a short silver bell-sleeved dress and matching boots, gaily evoked the disco seventies and eighties with Western-style songs. Then Kangana Ranaut burst into the spotlight in a sunshine-yellow ghagra-choli and danced to Dola re and Barso re.
Finally, showstopper Priyanka Chopra in a clingy silver sari pirouetted down the ramp towards the bemused judges to the dhol beat of Desi Girl. Acknowledgments: The opening acts and the Bollywood acts were choreographed by Shiamak Davar and performed by the Shiamak Davar Institute of Performing Arts.
The event is managed by 360 Degrees Experience and the show is scripted and directed by Moranis & Soorma Of Cineyug Entertainment. The regal gold crowns for the winners were created by the World Gold Council and D'damas and presented by Collection g; crowns designed on a sun-moon-star theme (sun for pride and dignity, moon for exquisiteness and sensuality and star for surprise and dazzle). Trainers: The finalists were groomed from skin to soul by experts in the field at sessions at Hotel Sahara Star.
The line-up of experts was as follows: Marc Robinson as fashion director and contestant director, Sabira Merchant for diction, Dr Rekha Sheth for skin care, Dr Apoorva and Sonal Shah for hair care, Alicia Raut as ramp-walk trainer, Dr Dilip Deshpande for smile and dental assistance, Dr Abhijit Desai for makeovers.
Prasad Bidappa was contestant advisor, Zakia Shakir the fashion photographer, Najeeb Ur Rehman chief colour and styling consultant from Schwarzkopf Professional and Vivian D'Silva the senior make-up artist from Make up Forever.

Sushmita, who was in the capital to inaugurate PC Jewellers' new showroom at Pitampura, said coming to Delhi always felt like coming home as she had lived a large part of her life in the city.
"I've been here 14 years of my life. I used to stay in Vasant Kunj (south Delhi) and it is such a touchy place. I've lived there so long.
Coming to Delhi is like homecoming for me," the former Miss Universe told reporters. "And everytime I come here, especially India Gate and Qutub Minar are the two places that really make feel I'm home," she added.
Sushmita's future projects include "Do Not Disturb" and "Dulha Mil Gaya", and she is reportedly in talks to play former Pakistan prime minister Benazir Bhutto in a bilingual biopic, but the actress says she would love to go back to her interests like travelling and writing.

Shilpa Shetty Hopes IPL Will Be A Success In South Africa
(NSI News Source Info) March 30, 2009: Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty, who co-owns Indian Premier League (IPL) team Rajasthan Royals, hopes that the new venue for the matches will be a success for the T20 series.
"Kudos to the South African government and South Africa cricket body who have welcomed us with open arms and I am really hopeful after attending the Australia vs South Africa Pro T20 Match on Friday, seeing the huge cricket fan base there, I am sure that the IPL will be hugely successful," Shilpa posted on her blog shilpashettylive.com/blog Sunday on board a flight to Cape Town.
The second edition of IPL is taking place in South Africa. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided to shift the Twenty20 tournament outside the country after state governments failed to assure security for the event that clashed with general elections.
Last year's winning team, Rajasthan Royals will kick off the series with a match against Bangalore Royal Challengers at Newlands, Cape Town April 18 and the 33-year-old actress also admitted to undergoing pressure to maintain the winning streak.
"The pressure is really on, especially for us but I feel Rajasthan Royals have an edge since three of our players belong to the South African team, namely South Africa captain Graeme Smith, Morne Morkel and Tyron Henderson," she wrote.

Madonna Arrives In Malawi

Madonna Arrives In Malawi
(NSI News Source Info) LILONGWE, Malawi - March 29, 2009: Air traffic controllers say Madonna's plane has landed in Malawi, where she is expected to begin proceedings this week to adopt a girl as her second child from the impoverished African country. Pop star Madonna poses with her adopted Malawian son David Banda in Mphandula, 2007. Madonna was expected to arrive in impoverished Malawi, airport officials said, to file documents allowing her to adopt a second child.
The controllers at the airport in the capital Lilongwe spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss the matter with reporters.
A Malawian welfare official and a person involved in the adoption proceedings have said the girl Madonna is hoping to adopt is about 4 years old and her unmarried mother died soon after she was born. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the case is considered sensitive.
Madonna adopted Malawian-born David last year.
