B&HGSG News: Live Review: Justin Bieber at Nokia Theater L.A. Live

B&HGSG News: Live Review: Justin Bieber at Nokia Theater L.A. Live

(NSI News Source Info) My Desk YYZ - July 22, 2010: The teen pop star shows his fans that he has the same appeal in flesh and blood as he does in the virtual world.

J_BIEBER_LAT_6

Maybe Justin Bieber is an airbender. He might even be an avatar, able to control all four elements, and anointed to unite disparate realms — like the grown-up world and the kid world, or hip hop-grounded teen pop and singer-songwriterly classic rock. If an arrow lurks under his famous coif, Bieber’s doing his best to conceal it; this most successful pop star is not a show-off, and he projected normality Tuesday throughout the Los Angeles stop of his “My World 2.0” tour.

BIEBER_LAT_2_2_But Bieber also made clear that what a teen star needs now is a new kind of magic, an ability to seamlessly move from the virtual realm of YouTube and Twitter to the physical one, where joyfully hysterical fans demand a strong emotional connection. His performance was all about securing the link between his fans’ imaginary relationship with him, established via the Internet and through the highly produced singles that have won young ears, and the one he was building with them in the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live.

The show began with Bieber seemingly stepping out of an Xbox video game. This tour is presented by Microsoft’s gaming wing, and as with so many aspects of popular culture now, Bieber’s success reflects the now-common experience of merging a physical self with a synthetic one. Skillfully alternating between lip-synching dance numbers and belting out ballads in his wavering but clear pubescent tenor, executing dance routines that were more about posing perfectly than showing much athleticism, Bieber collapsed the space between the regular boy he professes to be and the enchanted one he’s become to his fans.

BIEBER_CROWD_LAT_6_

The Canadian teen played a reality-tweaking hero in several guises Tuesday. He climbed an inflatable skyscraper, looking like a junior member of the cast of “Inception”; he floated aloft in contraptions that carried an echo of “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.” Lines of green light dominated the light show, giving the theater the feel of an arcade where a game of laser tag might break out at any minute.

Some of his actions were old-fashioned. He brought a fan onstage and gave her flowers, and convincingly clutched his duet partner, the equally precocious Jessica Jarrell (a.k.a. JJ), as they sang a slightly off-tune ballad. Others showed his vintage: a screen montage merged amateur family videos from his childhood with the video demos that made him famous and ended with him as a preschooler, declaring the driving ambition he shares with so many in his spotlight-obsessed generation: “I want to be on TV.”

BIEBER_LAT_3_6_

Bieber’s raw skills may not have impressed the parents who’d squired his target audience to the show. Invoking
Michael Jackson with a fragment of “Wanna Be Startin’ Somthin’” was a mistake; Bieber has neither the voice nor the grace of the King of Pop. (Merging that chestnut with “Walk This Way,” the song that famously united Aerosmith with Run DMC, was a more interesting move.) But what Bieber lacks in vocal oomph or break-dancing skills, he makes up in imperturbable presence. He’s the living definition of a natural performer, somehow free of affectations even when his voice was thoroughly drenched in Auto-Tune, or when he was up there in the air, a demigod with an acoustic guitar.

The night’s other performers seemed old-fashioned compared to Bieber. Sean Kingston opened with a jubilant but ultimately forgettable show; the Jamaican charmer makes great singles but doesn’t seem that comfortable onstage. IngĂ©nue Jarrell and the girl group the Stunners took brief turns performing to tracks. None made a huge impression.

Bieber did so by being so easy to grasp. Teen idols have always been avatars — embodiments of hard-to-manage new feelings and urges, guiding young fans to the next level of emotional maturity. They’ve often moved between fictional scenarios like television shows and the “real” life of live performance. But in 2010, they’re more like half-supernatural creatures than ever. The tween-and-younger crowd want them to be like Harry Potter and their American Girl dolls while their older sisters (and some self-confident brothers) embrace them as online pals and subjects of elaborate fan fictions. To fulfill this role, an idol now must cultivate perfection and accessibility in precise and equal measure. Bieber does so without breaking a sweat.

Priyanka ChopraWe all know that Bollywood is such a magnetically infectious dream world where fame and fortunes get flipped over night. In such an uneven world, here is one actress who has been even, right from the word go, courtesy, her stunning beauty and razor sharp intellect. She is none other than Priyanka Chopra, who also happens to be today's birthday girl.

Calling Priyanka merely as an actress will surely be an understatement, for she is not just an actress, but a phenomenal actress par excellence, who has slowly but steadily managed to reach super heights of stardom. After a successful modeling stint in which she was even crowned Miss World, this gorgeous beauty stormed into the Bollywood scene with power packed performances in films like
Andaaz, Mujhse Shaadi Karoge and Aitraaz. Who can simply forget her simply stunningly memorable performance of a Marathi mulgi in the smash hit flick Kaminey! No wonder then, Priyanka Chopra is on every director's wish list, and she has every reason to be so!

B&HGSG News: Young Fans Lift 'Inception' To No. 1

B&HGSG News: Young Fans Lift 'Inception' To No. 1
(NSI News Source Info) My Desk YYZ - July 19, 2010: Director Christopher Nolan's thriller with Leonardo DiCaprio brings in an estimated $60.4 million over the weekend, pushing 'Despicable Me' to No. 2.
Young adults powered summer's riskiest movie to the top of the box office chart this weekend, while families failed to turn out for what is looking like summer's biggest flop.
The top three

"Inception" topped the box office followed by "Despicable Me" and "The Sorcerer's Apprentice." (Warner Bros. / Universal / Disney)

Despite a divide in reactions along age lines, director
Christopher Nolan's thriller "Inception" opened to a strong $60.4 million, according to an estimate from distributor Warner Bros.

Walt Disney Studios' new version of the classic tale "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," meanwhile, sold a weak $17.4-million worth of tickets this weekend and $24.5 million since it debuted Wednesday. That's the worst opening for any big-budget film this summer.

It came in third at the box office behind
"Despicable Me,"which drew much of the family audience "Sorcerer's" was after. Universal Pictures' animated comedy declined 42% from its strong opening to $32.7 million, indicating that word-of-mouth was relatively strong.

While "Inception," which stars
Leonardo DiCaprio as an agent who invades targets' dreams, is not a mega-hit out of the gate, it got off to a very good start. That's particularly true considering it's one of the few high-profile movies this summer that's not a sequel or based on a book or video game.

Younger audiences seemed to love the movie's plot, praised by some critics as complex and criticized by others as confusing, as well as its novel visual tricks, but older adults were more mixed. Moviegoers under 25 gave "Inception" an average grade of A, according to market research firm CinemaScore; those over 25 gave it a B and the over-50 crowd gave it a B-.

The highest-ever opening for a film not based on source material was $77 million for
"Avatar" last winter. "Inception" failed to reach that stratsophere, it seems, because of its narrow appeal. With a PG-13 rating it couldn't get children, while adults over 35 simply didn't turn out in large numbers, representing only 27% of the audience.

"Our core showed up, and they loved it," Dan Fellman, president of domestic distribution for Warner Bros., said of the young crowds. "I totally understand that those in the older age groups got lost in it, and so that group is polarized."

But while the movie's appeal was narrow, it was also deep. Fellman said he's confident that the enthusiasm of younger fans will translate into strong word-of-mouth and repeat viewings.

"The key here is to have a passionate group of people who gave it such strong recommendations," he said.

Warner and Legendary Pictures, which together spent $160 million to produce "Inception," will need it to play well for several weeks to make good on their sizable investment, which also includes more than $100 million in worldwide marketing costs.

"Inception" has virtually no chance of approaching the $1 billion worldwide gross of Nolan's last movie, "The Dark Knight," which the studio cited regularly in advertisements for the new picture. But if "Inception" plays well in the coming weeks it could aproach $200 million domestically and rake in that much or more overseas, becoming a solid hit.

"Inception" got off to a solid start in its first major foreign market, opening to $8.6 million in Great Britain.

Disney, which spent $150 million to make "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," knew the film's advertising was not generating much interest among audiences and made several moves to counteract that weakness, including pushing up the opening from Friday to Wednesday to create pre-weekend buzz and offering 2-for-1 tickets online. But audiences just didn't take to the picture, despite the pedigree of producer
Jerry Bruckheimer and director Jon Turteltaub, who worked together on the hit "National Treasure" films.

"Obviously, we're disappointed for our filmmakers," said Disney distribution President Chuck Viane. "Nobody wanted a result like this."

Unless "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" is a huge success overseas, it's destined to be a major money loser for Disney. In its first major foreign opening, the film started with a good but not great $4.8 million in Russia.

"Apprentice" was greenlighted by Disney's prior executive regime under former Chairman Dick Cook and production President Oren Aviv. However, it was the first advertising campaign overseen by the studio's new marketing President M.T. Carney, a movie-business outsider hired in April.

B&HGSG News: Mercede Johnston Fairly Happy About Levi Johnston-Bristol Palin Engagement

B&HGSG News: Mercede Johnston Fairly Happy About Levi Johnston-Bristol Palin Engagement
(NSI News Source Info) My Desk YYZ - July 19, 2010: Mercede Johnston, Levi Johnston's little sister, is happy for him and her soon-to-be sister-in-law Bristol Palin, who announced their engagement early last week.

Mostly happy.

She's not quite sure why they're racing down the aisle ... and you aren't alone there,Mercede Johnston. The timing and nature of the announcement was odd.

Recent reports that Levi and Bristol are already in the process of shopping a showabout their second engagement and futre nuptials came as no surprise to us.

Noting that she, like Sarah Palin (supposedly), learned the news from Us Weekly, Mercede hints at this ulterior motive for their engagement on her blog:

Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston

Levi and Mercede in simpler, pre-celebrity gossip times.

"I have to say with all the odd things going on lately I expected something. However I think there may be more to this picture than we are able to see now.

I would like to take a moment to congratulate my soon to be sister-in-law and my big brother. I sure hope this is a sincere decision that you have thought through carefully Levi, and that it will bring you happiness.

I do wish you guys would take a little more time with this, and do not understand why you are rushing things. Unless of course there is some reason for the hurry.

I am also very happy to see Tripp in Levi’s arms again, and I do know that it will be good for him to have both of his parents back in his life full time from now on. And you know he really does deserve the best that you can provide.

I can’t wait to watch the two of you wed, I wouldn’t miss it for the world."

(NSI News Source Info) My Desk YYZ - July 19, 2010:Man, why do we ever make fun of Kim Kardashian?!?

Granted, the celebrity has no talent and is only famous because she allowed an aspiring hip hop artist to film the pair having sexual intercourse.

But she also seems mostly aware of these facts and, therefore, doesn't try to act, sing or do much at all except wear sexy outfits. Case in point, from this week: her one-piece at the AMP Energy Bullrun Rally.

Now, at an event for Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in Miami, the reality star essentially donned lacy lingerie in public. Check out Kim's outfit below, as she poses with her sisters and even with Selena Gomez:

Spotted on the airport were Aishwarya Rai and Akshay Kumar. Aishwarya, in her ‘Juicy Couture’ outfit and her streaked hair is definitely not looking her best. The streaking does not suit the Indian woman and Aishwarya looks no different. Neither the hair colouring nor the outfit is suiting the former Miss World. Her hair also seems all in need of a badly needed cut !!!!!

Apart from Bebo, Saif also took care of his crew and looked after their discomfort. After the shoot, he threw a lavish wrap up party for the entire cast and the crew in an expensive nightclub in Marrakech.

Each riad had its own private beach and terrace and was very close to the Atlas mountainsand desert. Kareena loved the place as it had a very simple, grungy look.”

Then the unit shifted to Marrakech. “Saif had a schedule wrap up party after we packed up there. Saif and his business partner Dinesh Vijan invited the entire crew to dance the night away at Theatro, a very expensive nightclub. One can also avail of personal DJs, it’s that exclusive.”

B&HGSG News:

Bipasha Was Doubtful About Playing Kashmiri Girl?

(NSI News Source Info) My Desk YYZ - July 15, 2010: It is a known fact that when Bipasha Basu comes into a project, it is understood by default that she would add a lot of star value and glamour to the film. However, in case of LAMHAA, it's a slightly different path which is taken by the team. While the star value is certainly there, it was the requirement of delivering a powerhouse performance that resulted in the gorgeous actress being roped into this Rahul Dholakia film.

"I think I suit the part of Aziza in the film", says Bipasha who plays a young Muslim woman in the film, "Her characteristics are such that they are really true to life. Not that I was very convinced about playing the part of a Kashmiri to begin with. In fact when I was informed about the role, my first question was 'Why me?'. I mean I am a Bengali and the entire personality of a Bengali is totally different from that of a Kashmiri."

However, Rahul's persistence paid as he was able to convince Bipasha about her being the best fit for the film.

"I guess it was the characterization that came in handy here", says Bipasha, "After listening to what Aziza had gone through, her troubled past and the resolve that she had about the future, I knew that I could pull it off well. The makers needed a fiery girl who was just like a common Kashmiri person with a certain hardness that has become a part of her nature due to the situation around her."

Elaborating further on the character that she plays in the film, Bipasha says, "Aziza is not manipulative. She doesn't have any ulterior motives. All she wants is freedom for people and peace all around her. She believes in the principles that she has been brought up with and follows what she believes in. She is someone who is really tough."
