Priyanka Chopra overexerts her vocal chords for ‘Kaminey’

Priyanka Chopra overexerts her vocal chords for ‘Kaminey’
(NSI News Source Info) October 2, 2008: The coming days are quite apprehensive for Priynaka Chopra for they will decide the fate of tow of her ambitious projects- ‘Drona’ where she plays Abhishek Bachchan’s bodyguard and ‘Fashion’ where she plays a supermodel. After playing a ramp model for “Fashion”, Priyanka recently walked the ramp for designer Ritu Kumar at the inaugural show of the HDIL Indian Couture Week.

Talking about her experience with ramp walk, Priyanka said, “Even after becoming an actress I’ve walked the ramp for friends like Rohit Bal and Vikram Phadnis. But not since I played a model in ‘Fashion’. Now walking the ramp at Ritu’s show it felt like I was doing a sequence for the film. I’ve done so much ramp-walking for the film, I feel I’m back to my modelling days.
At 17 when I first walked the ramp, I had done it for Rituji. And now again, after having played a model and walked the ramp continuously for a year for Madhur Bhandarkar’s film, when I got on the ramp for an actual fashion show, I couldn’t tell the difference between walking for ‘Fashion’ and for Ritu Kumar’s show. Both were ‘performances’ and still an integral part of my growth as a human being.”
These days Priyanka is busy with her shoot for Vishal Bhardwaj’s ‘Kaminey’. The film needs Priyanka to scream her lungs out for the character she plays and as a result Priyanka is suffering from a sore throat and her voice is reduced to a croak.
“I play this extremely vocal Maharashtrian girl. And I believe in making myself heard. Vishal has made sure my voice gets heard as far as possible,” Priyanka said.

Neetu Chandra back in action

Neetu Chandra back in action
(NSI News Source Info) October 2, 2008: In case you have forgotten who Neetu Chandra is, we are here to help you out- she was last seen in flicks like ‘One, Two, Three’ and ‘Traffic Signal’. Yes, Neetu is back to make her presence felt. In the coming months, she will be seen in ‘Oye Lucky Lucky Oye’, Flat No. 13B’ and ‘Kusarprasad Ka Bhoot’.

Not only this, Neetu has been signed by director Jeevita Rajasekhar for the Telugu remake of Raj Kumar Santoshi directed ‘Khakee’ and interestingly enough, Neetu will be playing the role of Tusshar Kapoor as well as Lara Dutta in the remake.
Confirms Neetu Chandra, “I loved Khakee and there was no way I would have missed an opportunity to be a part of the story, even though it was made in Telugu. In any case this is not the first time that I am working in a project down South. I have earlier also acted in GODAVARI.”
Talking about the film which will be titled ‘Satyamev Jayate’, Neetu reveals, “I play the role of a subordinate cop which was enacted by Tusshar Kapoor in the original. The character was so well written that it was noticed in spite of Akshay Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai and Ajay Devgan in the film. Icing on the cake was to jig to the dance number that is based on ‘Aisa Jadoo Daala Re’.”
About the item number played by Lara Dutta, Neetu smiles and says, “That’s the beauty of the script. The number has been amalgamated well into the role of the cop I play and the dance sequence is justified too. Composer Chinna has come up with an excellent tune which stands up for ‘Aisa Jadoo Daala Re’.”
The film also stars Sheril Pinty and Sanjana as the leading ladies other than Neetu Chandra. The film has Milind Soman as the main villain with Atul Kulkarni being repeated from the original cast of Khakee. “I am happy with the part I play as it is that of a lead role. I picked it up because it had lots of action. In fact you won’t believe the kind of stunts I have performed for the film”, says Neetu who is not new to action and is a taekwondo black belt who has earlier represented India.

Kerala - The Land Of Peace & Bliss

Kerala - The Land Of Peace & Bliss
(NSI News Source Info) October 1, 2008: Yesterday (Sept. 30), we with friends Jo L (UK) and Nirmala (New Delhi) visited the Sree Katampuzha Bhagavaty Temple, which is dedicated to Goddess Durga Maa and prayed for family & friends.
K. V. & Carina Seth around the temple
K. V. Seth in the temple
Sree Kadampuzha Bhagavathi Temple
The Temple for Sree Parvathi at Kadampuzha dedicated to Godess Vana Durga is one of the most prominent Devi temples in Kerala. The term ‘Puzha’ which in Malayalam denotes river is a misnomer here since the otherwise sylvan surroundings and verdant greenery around the location has no river skirting it.
The idol in the Sanctum Sanctorum is abstract in shape but it is ‘Swaymbhoo’ or natural manifestation. The temple is very simple in architecture without any imposing edifices or gold-plated flag mast. There are no festival processions or rum concerts. But the multitude of birds nestling on the verge of the green belt provide a natural ambience with their non-stop chirping and it is fully in tune with Kerala’s temple culture; ‘Kavu’ as it was known in ancient times, an epitome of preservation of ecological balance.
The serene atmosphere and the divinity attribute to the Godess at Kadampuzha attract thousands of pilgrims everyday. They unload their problems there and return carrying blessings.
Kadampuzha in Malapuram District of Kerala is far from the bustle of city life, just about two kilometers east of Vettichira between Valanchery and Kottakkal o N.H. 17. Those who prefer train journey can alight at Kuttippram or Tirur Railway Station from where there are buses to the temple (Distance 19 k.m.).
Legend about the origin of the temple is associated with the popular episode in the Mahabharatha where Arjuna does penance to appease Lord Shiva to obtain the divine weapon Paasupathastra. Lord Shiva approaches Arjuna as hunter Kiratha with His Divine consort Sree Parvathi escorting Him s huntress Kirathi. Arjuna is challenged by the Lord in disguise to test the skills of the boon-skeer.
In the fierce battle between Lord Shiva (Kiratha) and Arjuna, the arrow that Arhuna showered on Lord Shiva miraculously turned into Thehi flowers. Arjuna then recognizes the Lord and prostrates before him. Having found Arjuna worthy of the deadly weapon, the Lord obliges His devotee very soon. And here He is goaded by Sree Parvathi who hastened the process. Hastening in ‘twaritha’ in Malayalam and Goddess at Kadampuzha is worshipped as ‘twarita’ or one who is quick in granting blessings and favours.
The Shower of ‘arrows-turned into flower’ is symbolized here by a unique offering to the Goddess ‘Poomoodal’, the Swayambhoo Sthanam being covered completely by flowers. Petals of Thechi flowers are mandatory since they resemble arrow-heads. The quantity required is 2 ‘Kutanna’, one Kutanna being the capacity when two cupped palms are held together.
During the divine couple’s wandering in this forest, Sree Parvathi once felt thirsty and the Lord brought forth holy water from river Ganga through a well-directed arrow into the Earth. This event is immortalized as ‘Kaatan-Ambu-eitha-ala’ where ‘Kaaan’ is hunter, ‘ambu’ is arrow, ‘eitha’ is shot and ‘ala’ is hole. This became Katanambueithaala which was later colloquialised as Kadampuzha. Devotees thus worship the hole through which river Ganga sprouted and this is the idol… sankalpa.
Shankaracharya during one of his frequent pilgrimage while traversing this forest area was attracted by an all pervading ‘aura’ emanating from the dense undergrowth. Finding it difficult to approach the spot due to the heat generated by the radiation, he meditated upon Lord Vishnu as Narasimha and the Lord appeared. With the help of Sudarshanachakra of Lord Vishnu the Great saint moved closer only to find the radiance shrinking and finally vanishing into a hole on the Earth’s surface.
Through deep meditation using the ‘Divya-chakshussu’, the Aacharya discerned the nature of the phenomenon… nothing other than the divine presence of Sree Parvathi in the forest. The place was consecrated as a temple and in commemoration of ‘showers of flowers’, Poomoodal gained prominence due to the inherent quality and power of flower petals to contain heat. Lord Narasimha and Sudarshanachakra are honoured through depictions in front of the sanctum sanctorum. There are enclosures for Sree Dharma Shaastha and Nagakanyaka as upadevaas or subsidiary dieties. Modalities of worship are as prescribed by Shankaracharya.
Goddess here is worshipped in three forms viz., Vidya Durga (Saraswathi), Vanadurga (Durga) and Aadi Durga (Mooladurga - Lakshimi). As Durga, Shee blesses the devotees with health, early marriage and domestic harmony. Saraswathi is invoked for education and career. Lakshmi is of course Goddess of wealth and prosperity.
Another unique offering here is ‘Muttarukkal’ where coconuts brought by Devotees are broken by the Poojari in front of Devi’s idol in the presence of the devotees themselves and this is to ward off the system followed. The popularity of this ritual can be gauged from the figure of more than thirty lakhs of coconuts that are brought to the temple every year by the stream of devotees.
The vazhivadu counter is open from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 3.30 p. to 5 p.m. daily. There is facility for the devotees at the Enquiry Counter from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. to arrange their vazhivadus which will performed by the Devaswom on the next day itself.
The Devaswom will arrange to perform the above vazivadus for the devotees from distant places who may send the amount by MO/IPO/DD, etc. with full details such as the kind of vazhivadus, name, star, and address of the devotees, etc. noted in the MO. Coupon or in separate letters. Those who intend to have the vazhivadus performed daily or monthly on their star days can also send amounts noting the details. The prasadam will be sent to them by post after performing the vazivadus on the specified date, for which the postage amount @ 5.50 may also be sent along with the vazhivadu amount.
The reconstruction of the Sree Kovil (sanctum sanctorum) in the traditional architectural style with copper sheet roofing has been completed and the routine Poojas have been resumed with effect from 14-1-2002. The construction of Chuttambalam and Nadappura for providing more convenience to devotees is under consideration.
Accommodation facilities to devotees can be made available only on completion of the Sathram building which is under construction.
The Devaswom is providing free noon meals (Prasada Oottu) to all the devotees who visit this great temple. Annadanam is one of the five great yagnas in human life. Please join us and contribute the prasada Oottu Fund in cash or kind, generously.
The Devaswom is running a well equipped Charitable Dispensary since 1987 with free medical aid and free medicines to all patients irrespective of religion, caste and creed. This is a noble venture of the Devaswom with a view to extend the blessing of Bhagavathi to all devotees and to all people particularly the rural segment of the locality. We propose to expand the medical facilities further and the devotees are requested to join us in this charitable venture.

Minissha : Out of the comfort zone

Minissha : Out of the comfort zone
(NSI News Source Info) September 30, 2008: In her upcoming film opposite Imran Khan, Minissha Lamba has gone in for an image makeover. So, how was it playing such an outgoing character?

“It was anything but easy. It was much out of my safe zone, as I have never dressed like her. My attitude towards life and other things might be the same, but definitely not my body language,” says the petite actress. What about the most talked-about bikini scene? “It wasn’t uncomfortable at all. The only thing I was worried about was that I should be fit enough to sport a bikini,” she clarifies. Did that involve rigorous workouts and diets? “Yes, I had to go through all that. It was tedious, but then being thin is not enough nowadays, you have to be toned and fit. It was a challenge for me,” says she. What is her character like in the film? “My character, Sonia, lives on her own terms. She gets a high with parties, bikes, swimming and so much more. Even when she is kidnapped, she makes life hard for the kidnapper. She takes him head on. She is a very adventurous and unabashed kind of person. It was fun playing her,” says the chirpy actress. Of the two new hunks in Bollywood — Ranbir Kapoor and Imran Khan — who was more fun to work with? “That’s a completely unfair question. Both of them are my buddies and they were so much fun to be with. We come from the same generation, and that’s why we could open up to one another,” she explains. So, does this friendship go beyond films as well? “Everybody is busy nurturing their personal relationships, so it’s very difficult to get time for new ones,” she replies. Given a chance, would she go in for a negative role or maybe an action role? “Of course! It takes a right role from a right maker to be remembered. What’s the point of playing run-of-the-mill characters? One has to work towards being different,” she says. If she means what she says, then she knows what she is talking about.

Sanjay Gadhvi to hold screening of 'Kidnap' for mentor Aditya Chopra

Sanjay Gadhvi to hold screening of 'Kidnap' for mentor Aditya Chopra
(NSI News Source Info) September 30, 2008: Sanjay Gandhvi, who's ready with his latest release "Kidnap", might have parted ways with Yash Raj Films after the successful "Dhoom" series, but the director says he owes it all to the Chopras, for whom he will hold a special screening of his new film.

Gandhvi is upbeat about the Imran Khan starrer "Kidnap" and wants to show the film to his mentor Aditya Chopra. "After the screening for the cast and crew I'll hold a special show at Yash Raj Studios for Yashji and Adi. And as a sign of respect I also gave the first CD to them. I am what I am because of them. I go to the Yash Raj office every fortnight to have lunch and hang around. They send me CDs of all their films. I'm in touch with Uday and Aditya," Gadhvi told IANS.Releasing on Thursday, the film also stars Sanjay Dutt and Minissha Lamba.Gadhvi's "Kidnap" will clash with Abhishek Bachchan's "Drona", an actor who many feel got a raw deal in "Dhoom 2". Much water has, however, passed under the box office bridge since then and Gandhvi feels that there is room enough during the festive season for two biggies at the box office."We have a four-day weekend starting with Thursday when we're both releasing. And then they're two completely different kinds of films. Earlier, we've had two films on the same day doing well - 'Gadar - Ek Prem Katha' and 'Lagaan', for example. Besides it's Eid. Everyone releases films on Friday. We're releasing on dry day. We were supposed to release in August but were pushed forward," Gadhvi said. Minissha was cast in Yash Raj's "Bachna Ae Haseeno" after she started shooting for Gadhvi's "Kidnap". "I was at Yash Raj's office once. And Adi asked me how she was. The next thing I knew she was cast in a Yash Raj film," said Gadhvi. After the release of "Kidnap", Gadhvi intends to take a break. "I feel burnt out. I haven't had a break in 19 years. I live with my parents. I've a wife and kids. The children are not brats, fortunately."Gadhvi's father is a Gujarati filmmaker. "He has made two Gujarati films both with music by Kalyanji-Anandji. I grew up in their house with Kalyanji bhai's son Viju Shah. We Gadhvis are a community of storytellers. I hope I've done a good job of it in 'Kidnap'."

Salman's role is vital to Hello

Salman's role is vital to Hello
(NSI News Source Info) September 30, 2008 - Mumbai: Actor-turned-director Atul Agnihotri says he cast brother-in-law Salman Khan in his forthcoming film Hello not to increase its commercial value, but because the character in the movie demanded a star like him.Salman plays himself, a superstar, in the film that is based on the acclaimed book One Night At The Call Centre by Chetan Bhagat."Salman plays Chetan Bhagat's character in the film. But we have shown him as Salman - the film star - unlike the book which portrayed Chetan Bhagat (the narrator) as a writer," said Atul."I have not cast Salman because of commercial reasons or being a relative, but it was important for the role to have an actor who has a star status," said Atul.Hello is Atul's second film as director after Dil Ne Jise Apna Kaha, which released in 2004. Hello is slated to hit theatres on Oct 10.Though Salman does not play the lead role, he has an important role in the movie as the story begins and ends with him.And Salman Khan fans will not be disappointed as they will get to see enough of their superstar. The two-hour movie features Salman for at least 25 minutes, said Atul.Besides Salman, the film boasts of a large star cast including Katrina Kaif, Sharman Joshi, Sohail Khan, Isha Koppikar, Gul Panag, Amrita Arora and Arbaaz Khan.Katrina plays a fellow traveller who narrates the whole story to Salman. "It is through them that the whole story unfolds and they play a pivotal part in the film," said Atul. The director maintained that he had not deviated much from the novel, except for taking a few cinematic liberties. He explained that while books need more time to introduce characters as it has only words to communicate, cinema is different, being an audio visual medium presentation. The film revolves around a group of call centre workers who receive a call from god. Atul said it took them nine days to film the scene where god appears as it needed special treatment."It is always difficult to shoot at night, but the whole scene was shot in the night, which made things difficult for us." Extra efforts went into making the scene really special. "Lightning and thunder needed to be created. Besides, special effects were also used for the scene," said Atul, who debuted as an actor in Mahesh Bhatt's Sir in 1993.Atul said he has no plans to return to the big screen as an actor. "I had always planned to be a director and had assisted Pankaj Parasher for five years. In between, I went into acting and had a bad experience. Now I want to concentrate on direction as this was always my first choice."

Hrithik at his sensuous best in Kites
(NSI News Source Info) September 30, 2008 - Mumbai: Hrithik Roshan, who sizzles with Latin actress Barbara Mori in Anurag Basu's Kites, is being talked about for essaying one of the most sensuous roles of his till date."The two sizzle together. This is Hrithik's most sensuous film to date. The emphasis here is not only on his dancing but on his ability to generate sensuality which has so far remained largely under wraps, the chemistry with Aishwarya Rai in Dhoom 2 notwithstanding. In Kites, Basu has shot another more sensuous side of Hrithik," said a source close to the film.According to sources, the scenes between Hrithik and Barbara were so intimate and sensuous that Rakesh Roshan would gently be asked to leave the set.The Roshans are not talking about the film's sensuous theme and scenes, but Roshan Sr does inform that all is smooth sailing with Kites."We are on schedule. After finishing shooting in New Mexico on Sep 12, we've shifted to Las Vegas. From here we'll relocate for the last lap of the US shooting to Los Angeles on Oct 3. We're returning to Mumbai on Oct 12," said Rakesh Roshan. However, there was change of guard in the crew. Cinematographer Bobby Singh opted out of Kites but Hrithik claims there was no ill-will involved in the changeover."It was an amicable split. Now Ayananka Bose is doing it," said Hrithik.Ayananka, who was a former assistant to the well-known cinematographer Ravi Chandran, had shot Yash Raj Films' Jhoom Barabar Jhoom. The change, says Hrithik, has made no difference to the project. "We shifted earlier this week to Las Vegas as per plan. We're now here in Vegas for a month. Then we shoot in Los Angeles for eight days. After that we're done," said Hrithik.Kangana Ranaut, who plays the female lead in Kites, has just joined the Roshans and her favourite director Anurag Basu in Vegas. After working with Kangana in Gangster - A Love Story and Life... in a Metro, Basu strongly recommended the actress to the Roshans who liked what they saw.

She even saw Kung Fu Panda for which Angelina Jolie dubbed for."

Says Kareena, "It was fun dubbing for Roadside Romeo. It's the first time ever an actress has dubbed for an animation film and since it was a first of sorts, it was particularly challenging."Trust Kareena to always be a trendsetter.

Gul Panag's bikini avtaar for Maxim

Gul Panag's bikini avtaar for Maxim
(NSI News Source Info) September 29, 2008 - Mumbai: Former Miss India Gul Panag, mostly seen in de-glamorised acting roles, recently caught public attention by posing in a black lingerie for the cover page of Maxim.Gul said she did it to show off the "glamorous and real side" of her personality. "It was not for a change in my image. I am very happy to have the image that I have. I am associated with a certain type of work and I don't want to change that ever. But what is important is that people should understand that what they see on screen and what I am are two different persons," said Gul.Gul has received critical acclaim for playing offbeat roles in films like Dor and Manorama Six Feet Under, in which she was seen mostly in Indian attire."In reality, I am not that kind of person as shown in most of my films. I am not a village girl clad in 'saris' and 'salwar-kameez' in real life. I am a regular modern girl who is glamorous in real life and that's what I wanted to show. In fact, nobody has ever seen me in 'saris' and 'salwar-kameez' in real life," said Gul who debuted with Parth Arora's Dhoop in 2003."I can look good in a bikini or any other sexy outfit or equally convincing in a nightie. That's the job of an actor," she added. What made you say yes to Maxim? "Why not? It's the highest selling men's magazine in the world," she said.Asked about her future plans, she said: "It's not that I'll be doing more glamorous or power packed roles. It's about the offers. Glamour cannot be substance to a role. However, in most of my forthcoming films, I have glamorous roles."In Hello I am glamorous. I have two more films - Straight and Hello Darling - in which too I have glamorous roles."The actress said she is playing a modern, urban young woman in Hello. "My character is neither black nor white. It has a huge amount of grey in her. In the story, she is stuck in a conflict in choosing between love and practicality."Based on novelist Chetan Bhagat's One Night At The Call Centre also stars Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Sohail Khan, Isha Koppikar, Sharman Joshi, Amrita Arora and Arbaaz Khan.Gul said she liked the story and her role in particular. "I never sign a film unless and until I am convinced with the story. In this case, I knew the story beforehand because I had read the book earlier. It is an extremely interesting story and I hope people will like me in the role."Gul said she enjoyed most working for Manorama Six Feet Under. "It is closest to my heart and I enjoyed working in it the most."Among the newcomers, Gul finds Imran Khan as most dynamic and wants to work with him."I think Imran is extremely talented and the most promising among the newcomers. I came to meet Imran for a short while during an audition where we interacted and I found him a highly sensible and dynamic actor. If given a choice among the newcomers, I would definitely choose him," she said.

Riteish is just a friend: Genelia

Riteish is just a friend: Genelia
(NSI News Source Info) September 29, 2008 - Mumbai: Genelia D'Souza, Imran Khan's petite and perky co-star in Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na, brushes off rumours of any relationship with Riteish Deshmukh with a "we're just friends."Genelia teamed up with Riteish for her first Hindi film Tujhe Meri Kasam and they were seen together once again in Masti. While Tujhe Meri Kasam bit the dust at the box office, Masti hit a bull's eye. But the film's success didn't help much in shaping her career."I'm very much single. Riteish is a friend. But that's it. I've no idea where these rumours come from. We're both very busy. When we occasionally meet up, we're normal with each other, not the least self conscious about what's written about us. I'm very new to all this. I've done two films with Riteish," said Genelia. The actress forayed into showbiz with Amitabh Bachchan as her co-star."I did a Parker pen ad with him when I was still a kid. It seems I've been acting forever. I started young, yes. In 2003, I had three releases in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. Strangely acting was never an option. That ad was directed by Mansoor Khan. He kept me in mind for Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na, and here I am," she said."Actually Jaane Tu... was being produced by Jhamu Sugandh first. That's when I screen tested for the role of Aditi. I met the director Abbas Tyrewala and he almost finalised me. But he needed bulk dates from me and I was busy down south. He wanted to shoot at a stretch. I couldn't do that.""Then one day I got a call from Aamir Khan's office. Abbas wanted a complete newcomer. But Aamir wanted a girl who suited the character. The next thing I knew, I was on board."Genelia said she was never that keen on an acting career. "But when I saw how I was appreciated down South, I fell in love with the industry. I've been lucky. I didn't plan anything. I've never contacted a single producer. So far it's been an awesome journey."After Tamil and Telugu, Genelia has just made her debut in a Kannada film."I'm sure I'll be able to dub in all the south Indian languages soon. I know I can do it. I just need to get the slang and colloquialisms correct. Honestly, I need to dub my own lines in the South to give complete performances."Like Asin, Genelia is now dividing her time between Bollywood and south. She said that her commitment to southern directors affected her Bollywood career."I got busy with south; that's the only reason why it took me so long to get noticed in Bollywood. There's a buzz about Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na because it was Imran's debut film."Right now she is busy shooting for It's My Life with Harman Baweja. It is a Hindi remake of Telugu hit, Bommarilu."I've done the original in Telugu. Then I also did the remake in Tamil. Now I'm doing it in Hindi. The Tamil and Telugu versions were similar. But the Hindi version is very different. Today, both the South and Hindi are high-potential industries for me. I'm still a newcomer in Bollywood."

Bollywood titans to clash this festive season

Bollywood titans to clash this festive season
(NSI News Source Info) September 29, 2008 - New Delhi: Tinsel town denizens have been dishing out entertainment both on and off screen for the last three quarters of year 2008. But the heavy weights like Aamir Khan's Ghajini, Abhishek Bachchan's Dostana and Salman Khan's Yuvraj, have been saving the best for traditional festive season. October has an impressive, heavy-duty line up of films that have approximately Rs 50 crore riding on each one of them. Starting Friday with release of Abhishek-Priyanka Chopra's Drona and the current favourite Imran Khan starrer Kidnap, the months ahead will witness films from the biggest stars of Bollywood. Other biggies lined up for release are - Salman's Yuvraj, Aamir's Ghajini, Abhishek's Dostana and Delhi 6 and Shah Rukh Khan's Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. It has been a sunshine year so far with many small and medium budget films hitting the bull's eye even though there were some major disappointments from big production houses. The slew of low cost films that left a mark both on connoisseurs of good cinema as well as box office include Mithya, Jannat, Aamir, Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na, Phoonk, Rock On!, A Wednesday and even the very unexpected 1920.The year started on a slow mode with the half yearly report card for Bollywood showing only four films in the list of hits. In the first quarter of 2008, it was Race and Jodhaa Akbar, while in the second quarter it was Jannat which sent cash registers ringing. Sarkar Raj was also slightly above average performer in some select circuits. A major contributing factor, besides bad marketing and content, was that April-May months were dominated by the Indian Premier League, which knocked the wind out of all other forms of recreation including the small-screen tsarina Ekta Kapoor's soap-operas. According to trade observer Amod Mehra, the soaring prices of multiplex tickets are also to blame for the very high loss ratio. "People are not willing to shell out big bucks for films that they are not sure will be paisa vasool," he said. The audience became even more cautions when much-hyped film like Yash Raj Films Tashan bit the dust. For this reason perhaps other films that had strong star presence like Amitabh Bachchan's Bhootnath could not entice audiences to part with their hard-earned money. While it is a given that box-office collections are not the only venue for filmmakers and distributors to make up for their investment, it continues to be a good barometer for intrinsic quality of the film. It took Akshay, Katrina Kaif starrer Singh is Kinng to bring back audiences to cinema halls. The tale of a good-hearted bumbling Sikh reaffirmed faith of filmmakers in the comedy genre as most of comic capers released this year had failed at the turnstiles. That it was followed up quickly with the well-packaged Yash Raj Film's Ranbir Kapoor's Bachna Ae Haseeno helped the cause further and also came as a face saver for the industrious production house. The good run that started with Singh is Kinng is continuing even now with films like 1920 that had evoked little or no expectations managing to stay afloat. Let's see which other films will turn into blockbusters in the festive season.

Sanju's 'EMI' role based on real life

Sanju's 'EMI' role based on real life
(NSI News Source Info) September 29, 2008 - Mumbai: Sanjay Dutt plays Sattarbhai, a bully who collects loan instalments from bank debtors, in his forthcoming film EMI. The character has been inspired by a real-life collecting agent and the Bollywood actor spent a lot of time with him to get his act right."Sanju sir's character is modelled on a real-life agent. In fact, the whole film's plot about all these debt collectors who have the thankless job of getting bank loans back from debtors, was inspired by the real-life Sattarbhai," said TV tsarina Ekta Kapoor, who is co-producing the film with Suniel Shetty. The real-life character's identity is, however, being kept a secret right now."We don't want the real Sattarbhai to come into the picture until Sanju baba's fictional avatar is properly unveiled to the public," said Suniel Shetty.Sanjay Dutt met, interacted with and studied the real-life Sattarbhai very closely to get into the skin of the character. And he was glad that he wasn't playing an underworld gangster yet again."This is my most seriously funny and socially relevant character since Munnabhai. And I'm happy to be doing something that doesn't require me to go into the underworld," he quipped. As for the real Sattarbhai, he is free to share the thrill of the film unless he suddenly decides to demand a bigger share in the movie's investments. This isn't the first time this question has cropped up. When Preity Zinta played a real-life battered wife in Deepa Mehta's Heaven On Earth, the woman who inspired the character suddenly came forward to demand a huge amount of money."She demanded an obscenely astronomical sum of money that really put Deepa Mehta off," a member of the Heaven On Earth team said. However, producers Ekta and Suniel seem pretty sure their real character won't suddenly demand his pound of flesh."He's more than happy to be a role model for a character that Sanju baba is playing. We'll include him in the promotional events of EMI very soon," said Suniel. There's also the debate of EMI sharing its title with the international music label. Any copyright hassles on the anvil?"But we've registered our title. And EMI is accepted bank jargon, short for Equated Monthly Instalments. If EMI is a music company, then we're glad to be keeping such musical company," Suniel joked.
