I was never called Roshan Ahuja: Shiney
(NSI News Source Info) Wednesday - September 10, 2008 New Delhi: Bollywood actor Shiney Ahuja of Gangster fame has denied that his name was ever Roshan Ahuja and that he changed it to Shiney for his foray into filmdom."I don't know where that has come from now. Roshan is not my name. My parents named me Shiney and that has been my name all my life," Shiney said while he was in conversation with a radio jockey on one of the FM channels.Shiney was in the capital to promote his film Hijack, which has failed to woo audiences in the first week after its release.Talking about his role in the movie, Shiney said: "I play the character of Vikram Madan, a maintenance chief of Chandigarh airport, a man who has a hero in him and who never gives in."The film, also starring Esha Deol, tackles the subject of hijacking.Shiney began his Bollywood career in 2003 with Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi and continued doing serious roles in films like Gangster, Woh Lamhe and Khoya Khoya Chand. But the actor says he is not choosy about the genre of films that he has done in his five-year-old career."I don't really have any specific genre. My genre is a film's script. If I like the script and if it excites me, then I do it. It's that simple," Shiney said."I've never said that I do only intelligent films. I do those films that I believe in and if I like its script. If the movie has a soul, it can be intelligent or unintelligent, I would still go ahead with it," he added. It is apparently the script alone that drives Shiney to zero in on his films. He said: "Good scripts are my success mantra. If you like the movie, if it interests you, if it moves you when you read it, chances are you will perform well in it and that is what makes it a success."

(NSI News Source Info) September 10, 2008 - Mumbai: A much coy Minissha Lamba is going for a major image makeover. In her soon-to-be-released Kidnap, she would be donning a bikini which certainly comes as a surprise to those who have seen her in films like Yahaan, Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd, Shaurya and Bachna Ae Haseeno."Well, it is shocking for quite a few people but if you ask me, I am really enjoying it all", says Minissha who has had an eventful 2008 so far."Seriously, I felt beautiful when I donned the bikini for Kidnap. And though people do ask me how comfortable I was with the thought of wearing a bikini, let me tell you that I was more focused on getting my body into the right shape than worrying about anything else." Talking about her decision to join the bikini bandwagon, Minissha says: "Yes, I have joined the bikini bandwagon. After all, not many girls are doing it even today, isn't it? In any case when you see Kidnap, you would realise that the makeover isn't for the sake of it. This was meant to be a part of the character and I was duly convinced that donning a bikini was indeed an integral part of the script." By wearing a bikini for Kidnap, Minissha now joins the gang of young women who have willingly agreed to get into the costume for a Sanjay Gadhvi film. After Esha Deol (Dhoom) and Bipasha Basu (Dhoom 2), she is the new bikini girl for Gadhvi. "And I am so very proud of that", exclaims Minissha, "When Sanjay told me that I had to go through this image change in Kidnap, I was game for it. I feel it was great to explore a new side of me. Going by the reaction that I am getting from people, I guess the experiment has indeed paid off."

Kuselan dispute resolved
Kuselan dispute resolved
(NSI News Source Info) Monday - September 8, 2008 Chennai: A month after the Rajinikant-starrer Kuselan was declared a flop by exhibitors and smaller distributors who complained of huge losses, the compensation dispute was resolved quietly with the Tamil superstar agreeing to pay them a higher amount. The Tamil Film Producers' Council and Tamil Nadu Exhibitors' Association issued a joint press release, saying: "In film business, one casts the net to fish amply in muddy waters. Sometimes, the catch is not worth the effort. Hereafter, all the sections of exhibitors, distributors and producers will move together jointly to avoid such catastrophes."Top film industry sources said that Rajinikant had agreed to compensate losses of the exhibitors and smaller distributors to the tune of roughly 35 per cent of their investment.Exhibitors had blamed the main distributors Pyramid Saimira of hyping the film and jacked up its distribution costs. When the film flopped, smaller distributors and exhibitors claimed compensation from the producers and main distributors. The good opening of Pyramid Saimira's new release Saroja had alleviated the sufferings of exhibitors, sources said.Though Rajnikant had a slightly long guest role in the film, Kuselan had been billed as a full length Rajnikant movie. This resulted in the movie being sold for Rs 600 million including publicity costs.Since Kuselan did not have any of the usual dramatic elements of a Rajnikant-starrer, fans of the movie icon stayed away from the theatres. When exhibitors announced a non-cooperation move against Saimira, the producers and main distributors of Kuselan, Rajnikant tried to hammer a settlement by initially offering Rs 100 million as compensation. The offer was rejected by exhibitors saying their losses amounted to much more and "banned" films being distributed by Saimira and producer K Balachander. The move threatened to bring film commerce in the south to a grinding halt as at least six films whose combined cost exceeded Rs.4 billion would have been affected if the ban had continued.Industry watchers estimate the losses to be in the region of Rs.350 million.Rajnikant has left for the USA to take part in shooting assignments of forthcoming film Robot, being directed by Shankar. The cost of the sci-fi film is expected to cross Rs 2 billion.

Apoorva teams up with Zayed yet again
(NSI News Source Info) Monday - September 8, 2008 Mumbai: Zayed Khan-starrer Mission Istaanbul might not have worked at the box office, but that hasn't stopped its director Apoorva Lakhia from signing on the actor for another project.Lakhia has roped in Zayed for a remake of a big-budgeted Hollywood gangster epic. The film, which is being produced by Sa Re Ga Ma (HMV), is about the journey of a father and son through a series of adventures."HMV is right now in final stages of negotiations with the American producers of that film. So I wouldn't like to reveal the title on record. But, yes, it's a very different and unusual take on gangsterism," Lakhia said.Three years ago, Lakhia cast Amitabh Bachchan in Ek Ajnabee - an almost frame-by-frame remake of the Denzel Washington-starrer Man On Fire - without bothering with copyrights. But he wants his next remake done in a proper manner and says he will buy the rights of the Hollywoood movie."Times have changed now. Warner Brothers, for example, is letting Indian filmmakers do remakes of their films while remaining co-producers on the adapted projects. I think Nikhil Advani is co-producing a desi version of Warner's Wedding Crashers directed by David Dhawan. We'd like to outright buy the remake rights for the American film that I'm planning to remake."Earlier this week Lakhia, who was busy with his brother's wedding in the US, flew down to Bangkok to narrate the script to Zayed, who is shooting for "Blue" there.Apart from this, Lakhia is also set to start a film for Suniel Shetty and Ekta Kapoor.

Salman ignores Lara Dutta on ‘Dus Ka Dum’
(NSI News Source Info) September 8, 2008: As Salman’s ‘Dus Ka Dum’ is all setting up to wrap up, it has a lot of guest celebrities in store for its viewers. After Jeetendra and Tushaar Kapoor, Rani Mukherji, Lara Dutta and Rakhi Sawant will be seen sharing the television screen with Salman in the show.
Salman is known to get along very well with his celebrity guests and this was evident with the way Salman was made the studio echoed with laughter and enjoyment as entertained everybody with spotty one-liners. One thing which was very very obvious was Salman’s cold behavior with Lara. He mingled quite well with Rani and Rakhi, but not with Lara Dutta.
In fact, Lara felt completely ignored as Salman gave her a cold shoulder and didn’t even speak to her much. This behavior of Salman has its roots to the time when Lara refused a role in his next ‘Main aur Mrs. Khanna’ on the plea that her role was very short. But then Sallu Mian was shocked when she went ahead and agreed to do a smaller role in Shahrukh’s ‘Billoo Barber’.
Salman made no efforts to hide the cold vibes between himself and Lara. Whether his behavior was justified or not, is up to you to decide.

(NSI News Source Info) September 8, 2008: It was a big night for Britney Spears at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards, as she get to make up for her less-than-stellar performance last year with a big win.
Though she’s been nominated multiple times throughout her tenure as an American pop music princess, Brit never got to take home a moon man - until tonight.
The “Gimme More” songstress garnered the trophy for Best Female Artist for her video for “Piece of Me,” and received a warm congratulations from her manager/date Larry Rudolph.
Spears also opened the show tonight with a fun little skit opposite Jonah Hill in which the “Superbad” actor tried different ploys to try and kiss the “Toxic” singer. Overall it was a much better opening than her lackluster performance in 07.

Hollywood Celeb....Lily Allen & Sir Elton John
IT'S WAR! CELEB FEUDS September 7, 2008 NSI News Source Info
Hollywood Feuds
Not all was chummy between young pop singer Lily Allen and her industry elder, Sir Elton John, when they hosted the GQ Men of the Year Awards on Tuesday in London. Allen was slurring her words and swearing after reportedly spending much of the evening sipping champagne onstage. At one point, when she told the audience, "Now we reach a very special point in the evening," John cracked, "What, you are going to have another drink?" Allen, dressed demurely in a ball gown, responded: "F*** off Elton, I'm 40 years younger than you, I have my whole life ahead of me." Not to be outdone, John, 61, shot back, "I could still snort you under the table."

Is Oprah Biased? Host Won't Interview Palin
(NSI News Source Info) September 7, 2008: She may have let Tom Cruise jump all over her couch, but Oprah Winfrey says that Sarah Palin can't even sit on it.
At least not until after the presidential election, that is.
At least not until after the presidential election, that is.
Responding to media reports first publicized on Matt Drudge's "The Drudge Report" claiming there was turmoil at Winfrey's Harpo Studios about whether to book the GOP vice presidential nominee on the popular talk show, Winfrey's camp said today that while she has nothing against Palin, the veep hopeful won't appear on the show anytime soon.
"The item in today's 'Drudge Report' is categorically untrue," Winfrey said in a written statement provided to ABCNews.com. "There has been absolutely no discussion about having Sarah Palin on my show.
"At the beginning of the presidential campaign, when I decided that I was going to take my first public stance in support of a candidate, I made the decision not to use my show as a platform for any of the candidates," Winfrey wrote.

"Once she brings Obama on and opens the door to political people [on her show], it's only fair to bring both Republicans and Democrats on," she added.
But, according to mother and Winfrey fan Donna Chaffins, when Obama appeared on the show does matter.
"Personally, as long as she claims she will not use her show as a platform and as long as she doesn't campaign for him on the show, I have no problem with her waiting to have Palin on the show," Chaffins said.

Chaffins said that she "would have an issue" if, now that nominations have been decided, Winfrey had only the Democratic candidates on and not the Republicans.
"I want her to be fair," said Chaffins, who is undecided on whom she will vote for come November.
Can Oprah Balance Her Support for Obama With Her Support for Women?
While Winfrey's endorsement of Obama is here to stay, why she will not invite Palin on her show, as one of the powerful women she often features, is unclear to many fans who said that regardless of her policies, Palin is making history.

While Winfrey's endorsement of Obama is here to stay, why she will not invite Palin on her show, as one of the powerful women she often features, is unclear to many fans who said that regardless of her policies, Palin is making history.
"Whether you agree with Sarah Palin and her positions or not, the fact that she's the first female Republican vice presidential candidate is historical," said Joanne Bamberger, who runs the blog Punditmom1.blogspot.com.
"I'd have to imagine her audience would really want to see Palin," said Bamberger, who said that she is voting Democratic but still would love to see Palin interviewed by Winfrey. "It seems to me that Winfrey's show is all about empowering women."
By not having Palin on the show, Grossman-Green says that Winfrey is actually doing a disservice to her predominantly female audience, many of whom look for inspiration in the guests who appear on the show.
"She's doing an injustice to women by not having Palin on," Grossman-Green said. "Palin is a wonderful role model of what we're all trying to do as working women -- which is everything."
But not everyone thinks that it would make sense for Oprah to counter her support for Obama by allowing Palin to appear on her show.

"Having Palin on the show would be a conflict of interest," said Elwood Watson, a professor of history and African-American studies at East Tennessee State University and co-author of "The Oprah Phenomenon."
"She's made up her mind, and she's not going to sway from it," said Watson, when asked whether it would be plausible for Winfrey to simultaneously support Obama and interview Palin on her show, which could be interpreted as an endorsement. "How can you endorse two people?"
With almost 1,000 comments on her community message board dedicated to a possible Palin interview, Winfrey is already garnering strong reaction among her fans -- both those who are pleased with her decision and those who are not, such as Grossman-Green.
"I'm actually pretty angry with her right now because of this," she said. "I don't think I will be a gung-ho supporter right now.
"I'd think twice about switching her on or even buying her magazine."

Heaven on Earth premieres at Toronto fest
(NSI News Source Info) Sunday - September 7, 2008 Toronto: Canada-based Indian filmmaker Deepa Mehta's Heaven on Earth, her Punjabi production about domestic violence in the immigrant community here, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.Mehta was in attendance with her whole cast, including Preity Zinta for the screening Saturday. Before the start of the film, she introduced the cast to the audience and also said that the theme was dear to her heart. Mehta praised Preity for playing her role with aplomb.Set in the Toronto suburb of Brampton, "Heaven in Earth" is the story of a Ludhiana girl Chand (Preity Zinta) who moves here after marrying Rocky Grewal (Vansh Bhardwaj) only to find herself locked in a loveless marriage, and a life of beatings and torture by her husband and in-laws. Chand's journey into hell begins the moment the na ve girl lands in Canada (considered heaven in Punjab). The awkwardness of their relationship is captured brilliantly, with the newly married couple not knowing how to consummate their relationship. Then they go on honeymoon only to be intruded upon by Rocky's mother and brother on their very first night. Soon, Rocky's Punjabi male instinct to dominate overtakes, and he starts subjecting Chand to verbal abuse and beatings at the slightest pretext.Like a typically overbearing Indian mother-in-law, Chand's mom-in-law too begins very demanding. The newly arrived Chand snaps one day when her mother-in-law holds up a chapatti to tell her how badly prepared it was. When Chand floors her with a violent push, all hell breaks loose and she gets the beating of her life. After this, she is subjected to beatings almost daily, suspected of infidelity and forced to go through agni pariksha (test by fire) to prove her innocence. And like most immigrant women, Chand is also sent to work in a factory. But she cannot collect her salary because it goes directly to her husband. As her misery deepens, Chand calls her family in Ludhiana to plead with them to send her an air ticket so that she could escape. Which, of course, she does in the end by walking out on her husband. In between, Mehta brilliantly brings out what most Punjabi families seeking 'phoren' (NRI) grooms for their daughters covet: sponsorship for them also to settle abroad. Chand's parents too want Rocky to sponsor their son Gurpreet.

Bhandarkar donates National award money
(NSI News Source Info) Sunday - September 7, 2008 Nagpur: Bollywood producer-director Madhur Bhandarkar donated the cash he received along with the National Award to three poor Vidarbha women, whose debt-ridden husbands had committed suicide, at a simple but touching function here Saturday. The director's mother Shanta Bhandarkar handed over the dole cheques worth Rs.100,000 each to Kamla Waghmare, Sugandha Kannake and Sangita Darne even as his younger brother Nitin looked on with glistening eyes. When he won the National Award this week for his film Traffic Signal - his third consecutive award winning creation after Chandni Bar and Page 3, he had announced he would donate the cash to the three widows. With the help of friends in media and local administration, Bhandarkar had identified the three families, whose breadwinners - Kashinath Waghmare of Buldana district, Shyamrao Kannake and his son Vinod besides Prakash Darne of Yavatmal district - committed suicide in the last one year. The widows, their children in tow, were brought to the city from their villages to receive the aid as Bhandarkar, who was meaning to visit their homes, was short of time. None of the families was found 'eligible' for the government aid though a top bureaucrat admitted to IANS that they were all genuine cases of acute economic distress that could not fit in the set criteria for help.Presenting a picture of humility, the purposive director of socially relevant films told journalists that it was a small gesture from his side for just three out of hundreds of distressed agricultural families whose tales of woe had left him disturbed over the last three years."Moved by newspaper reports of farmers committing suicide in the rural area of my state (Maharashtra), I always thought I had to do something about their families in my small way ... and I feel relieved today I have done it," Bhandarkar said adding, he hoped others in the industry and the corporate world at large would follow suit.He said he was open to the idea of making a film on the agrarian crisis and farmers' plight but that it would require him to first study the problem and the countryside thoroughly. "Though I live in urban India, it's not my commitment to make only metro-centric films," he added. What explains his empathy for the underprivileged?"I come from a lower middle class family and I have struggled hard in life," Bhandarkar said, recalling the days just before his entry into the film industry when he distributed video cassettes from door to door in Pune on a rental of Rs.10.The function was organised by social worker Umakant Agnihotri who also runs an aviation academy in the city.

Imran replaces Ranbir in Delhi Belly
(NSI News Source Info) Sunday - September 7, 2008 Mumbai: Actor Imran Khan won many hearts with his debut film Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Na that was produced by uncle Aamir Khan. Now he's "thrilled" to be working in yet another film by uncle dear - Delhi Belly."Yes, I'm finally doing Delhi Belly, and never mind if my maamu (uncle) is a bit of a slave-driver," joked Imran. "But seriously... I'm actually thrilled to be doing Delhi Belly. Working with Aamir maamu is always great. And after Jaane Tu ... we're doing something totally different this time," Imran said. Delhi Belly, to be directed by ad-maker Abhinay Deo, is a sex comedy about a young foreign-returned youth's adventures in the capital. Ranbir Kapoor of Bachna Ae Haseeno fame was finalised for the role, but date hassles cropped up.Ironically, Imran says he was the first choice but had to opt out due to date problems."I had met the director of Delhi Belly about six-seven months ago and he had even screen-tested me. But there were major date hassles. Since my dates were locked in for Luck I requested the Delhi Belly guys to adjust accordingly. But they were unable to do so. And since I had combination dates for Luck with Mithun-da (Mithun Chakraborty)and Sanju baba (Sanjay Dutt), I had given up the idea of doing Delhi Belly," Imran said."My Luck dates were pre-poned and Delhi Belly dates were shifted forward. So I'm finally doing the film. Kehte hain daane-daane pe likha hai khaane wale ka naam. The same goes for roles, I guess," he remarked.Imran became popular as the 'chocolate boy' in his debut film. Any regrets about not being in Abbas Tyrewala's next film?"No regrets at all. After 'Jaane Tu..., Abbas is a dear friend. If he needs me for a film he'll call me. I'm now working with other directors. He's working with other actors. We aren't in a space where we need to sit and cry because we aren't working together."There's so much stuff happening to me I've no time to brood over what I'm not doing. Fortunately I've people in my life like my mom and my girlfriend to keep me grounded."But taking a break is important, even for a newcomer."After I finish Luck and start my uncle's Delhi Belly, I plan to take a break," Imran said.

If the buzz is to be believed, Ghai's next directorial venture will have thespian Dilip Kumar making his comeback after 10 long years. It may be noted that Dilip Saab and Subhash Ghai last worked together in the smash hit Saudagar. Since then the veteran actor has only acted in one film- Umesh Mehra's Qila which released in 1998."Yes, it's true that Yusuf Saab and I are contemplating to do a film together. I have been insisting him for the last two years to do a film with me and finally I have managed to convince him. Right now, we are working on the script which should be hopefully ready by December this year. We plan to start filming next year," Ghai said. So what is this film all about and how did he manage to convince Dilip Kumar to return acting after a decade? "The film will be a light entertainer and Dilip Saab will be playing a pivotal role. We are still in the process of finalizing the other cast members. As for convincing Dilip Saab, all I can say is that we share a great comfort level after having worked in three films in the past. He trusts me and believes in my directorial abilities. He was clear that he would do the film only if I am directing it", added Ghai. Finally, coming to his current project Yuvraaj, how much of the shooting is left and when is it likely to release? "I am in the process of finishing Yuvraaj. We have about three - four days of shooting still left. The music of the film (composed by maestro AR Rahman) will be out in October. I should be able to release the film sometime in November or December this year", signs off the veteran filmmaker.
