Kerala: Boy becomes man Suriya in Vaaranam Aayiram
(NSI News Source Info) November 17, 2008: No starry fuss, no showy frills. Call Suriya for an interview and the actor’s reply is prompt. Despite the frenetic pace of his Ayan shoot, it’s not a let’s-get-it-over-and-be-done-with-it interface. A clear reflection of the fastidiousness that’s seen him through many highpoints in a career spanning a little over a decade.
For someone who cherry-picks his roles, Vaaranam Aayiram, which opens today, adds a new dimension to his diverse repertoire. “It’s an intense drama about the relationship between different people — father-son, boy-girl, etc. And for the first time, I play son and father in a film. It’s a totally new experience for me,” he says.
Having proved in film after film that he can strike a balance between spontaneity and restraint, Suriya continues, “Since the film spans generations, it called for well-nuanced acting. Playing student or slipping into a role that portrayed my age wasn’t difficult. But playing a father was a huge challenge. I collected a lot of photographs and observed the body language of old people. Director Gautham Menon has a keen eye for detail and his inputs helped me.”
